Anna swallowed, but she didnât say anything. How could Jamie know Anna was writing about Bailey?
âBecause she totally came to school with orange marker on her fingers todayâwhich is so weird. It doesnât even match Pumpkin Spice, like mine and Mackenzieâs.â
Jamie held up her hand so Anna could see the polish on her fingernails. âItâs not our fault we got manicures without her. I know her mom said sheâd take us after garden club was over, but I wanted to go right after school. It looks dumb to have marker on your nails.â
Anna swallowed again. She didnât think it was that dumb. Sheâd colored her fingernails with marker before too. But she didnât want to tell Jamie that. And she didnât want to talk about Bailey stealing the pumpkin either. She had promised her father that she wouldnât accuse Bailey without proof.
Jamie leaned forward and spoke in an eager whisper. âDid Bailey really steal your pumpkin?â
Anna leaned away from her. She didnât want to talk about Bailey with Jamie. âI think you are supposed to start by saying something you like about the poem.â
Jamie rolled her eyes. âFine. I like the way you call Bailey an orange-fingered thief.â
Annaâs stomach gave a little lurch. She didnât like the way Jamie kept calling Bailey a thief. Even though Anna did think that Bailey took Herbert, it still made her feel funny the way Jamie was saying it.
âYou know, my root beer lip balm is missing. It wasnât my fault I couldnât give one of them to Bailey. The package only came with two, and I promised Mackenzie she could have one. Maybe Bailey took my lip balm too.â Jamie folded her arms across her chest. âI canât believe her!â
âYou canât just accuse her of that,â Anna said, her heart starting to pound. âYou donât have any proof.â
Jamie huffed a noisy breath. âOf course I do. She stole your pumpkin! That means sheâs a thief.â
Just then, Mr. Hoffman poked his head out into the hall. âAre you girls almost done?â
âWe just finished,â Jamie said, standing up.
Anna didnât want to go back into the classroom yet. She felt like she needed to explain something to Jamie. Anna thought Bailey might have taken the pumpkin, but she wasnât 100 percent sure. She didnât have any evidence yet. And even if Anna did find evidence that Bailey took Herbert, it wouldnât mean that Bailey stole something else too.
âGood. Come back in.â Mr. Hoffman held the door open for Jamie and Anna. âWeâre going to share our poems.â
Anna followed Jamie and Mr. Hoffman back into class. Her stomach was in knots and her throat was so dry she could barely swallow. Jamie sat down at her desk and glared at Bailey.
âDo I have any brave volunteers who would be willing to read their poems to the class?â Mr. Hoffman asked.
Anna looked around the room. No one was raising their hands.
Jamie was whispering something in Mackenzieâs ear. When she finished, Mackenzieâs eyes went round as marbles and her jaw dropped open.
